Quarry Trails

As a photographer, I’ve visited the quarries near Barre in Graniteville many times over the past 10 years, but this is the first time that Barbara accompanied me. We hiked the short trail into the Wetmore & Morse quarry, which is abandoned and quite large as it extends in an arc of approximately ⅔ of a mile. The site includes signage with several historical photos, industrial detritus and recent stones carvings.

Dozens of massive piles of waste rock, called ‘grouts’, mark the landscape. The sun flair points to the base of what was a boom derrick, 11.06.20.

Since I was last here in 2016, several stone monuments have been added to the site, including these pillars and sculpture, 11.06.20.

One of the dozen or so recent expert carvings on the face of a large stone wall, 11.05.20.

Another large abandoned quarry is visible from the path, 11.06.20.

In addition to the quarries in and visible from Upper Millstone Hill, there are 40+ abandoned quarries here in nearby Lower Millstone Hill. Hiking/mountain biking trails weave throughout Lower Millstone Hill. 11.06.20
